Because of Winn-Dixie / comments by Tori S.

This book is about a girl with a father who is a preacher who just moved to Naomi, Florida.  Their mother ran away years ago and Opal is looking for a friend.  when she goes to the grocery store she finds a wild dog running around.  She fakes he's hers and the dog's name became Winn-Dixie.  Now because of him they find many friends, adventures, and also become very close companions.  You will love it!  I read it twice.

Winn-Dixie does many things that give them more friends and that is why it was given its title.

4 stars - my favorite author!

Annie and the Old One / comments by Ryan L.

The book is about a girl named Annie and her grandma. When Annie went to school she wanted to get in trouble so her parents would come. She wanted that to happen because she missed her parents. At the end of the book she wanted to learn how to weave but they ran out of the cotton they used to weave with. So she started to take apart a weaving piece her mom did and started to weave it back. I think it is given this title because there is a girl named Annie and there is an old person in the story. 3 stars Ryan L., 3rd grade, 2011-2012

Because of Winn-Dixie - comments by Kaleigh M.

India Opal lost her mom when she was 3 years old. One day she went to the store and found a dog and took it home and named it Winn-Dixie after the store. She soon met lots of friends, for example, Mrs. Franie, Gloria, Amanda, and Otis. Her and Gloria planed a party and invited friends over and had a blast! Dr. Desoto comments by Tori SJG.

Dr. DeSoto is a little mouse who is a dentist. He doesn't allow any animals that are scary or harmful to mice. One day a fox came by with a terrible toothache. The fox pleaded and pleaded. Dr. DeSoto discussed this problem with his wife. They decided they would treat him. When Dr. Desoto climbed in to the mouth he found a rotten bicuspid that would have to come out. They put him in a deep sleep with laughing gas, and they pulled the tooth out. When the fox awoke Dr. DeSoto said he would have the foxes fake tooth ready in the morning. As he was walking home the fox decided to try to eat the mouse tomorrow. Mr and Mrs. DeSoto were worried, but they came up with a plan. The next day the fox came in and the tooth was put in. Then Dr. DeSoto put some liquid on his teeth so they would never hurt again. When the fox tried to open his mouth he couldn't because of the liquid so he couldn't eat Dr. DeSoto. The book was given this title most likely because the main characters name is Dr. DeSoto. 4 Stars Tori SJG, 5th grade, 2011-2012
