A girl named Hollis has been in foster homes. She gets a home with a woman named Josie. Hollis draws pictures a lot. She paints a memory of her last family, the Reagans. Hollis decides to take Josie and herself to the Reagans house during the winter while they're at their log cabin. The two of them stay there past Christmas. Then when Hollis goes out to call Josie's friend Beatrice she meets up with Steven and he takes her to the phone booth. He calls up his mom for her. Hollis takes the phone and asks, "Can I come home?"
