Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien

1972 Newbery Medal

Mrs. Frisby's son Timothy was seriously ill. They had to move because the farmer was going to plow the field and rosebush. In the end, they move and Timothy becomes well again.

I thought it was a great adventure story that showed things that could happen in life.

4 stars - It was a great book and I recommend it to others.

Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson

2006 Newbery Honor

Soonie's grandmother teaches her how to sew stars, moons, and roads on quilts to help slaves runaway at night. Then towards the end, Ann and Caroline are seven years old and are standing in line with their mother. They're in line to change the law about the differences of the black and whites.

The book was ok but most of the time I wasn't interested reading it.

A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck

1999 Newbery Medal

Once there was a girl that went to stay at her grandma's. Her grandma is a little weird and people fear her. The girl gets to experience a new world and she has lots of fun.

I thought that the book was funny and slow and sort of sad.

Doctor DeSoto by William Steig

1982 Newbery Honor

Dr. Soto is a dentist, but he is a mouse and does not treat things that eat him. But when a fox has a very bad cavity, the doctor helps him. So when he thinks the fox will eat him, he puts glue on its teeth so the fox will never visit him again.

It was ok but it would be better if they showed whatever happened to the fox after he leaves.

2 stars - It was ok.

From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

1968 Newbery Medal

In the first part of the book, Claudia thinks she is not appreciated so she runs away from home with James, her brother, for a few days to the Metropolitan Museum. But when she goes there and sees a statue called Angel, she has to know more about it. This leads her to Farmington, Conn, to the house of Mrs. Frankweiler. Mrs. Frankweiler gives them the information they need and a ride home.

It was a good book, but what made it just good was that they never really needed the money from the fountain.

3 stars - It was a good book.
