A boy named Leigh suffers through his parent's divorce where he doesn't see his dad because he is a trucker. His favorite author, Mr. Henshaw, is the one he asked for advice on writing a story. Even though Mr. Henshaw gives him bad advice, Leigh writes a story for a contest at school, and ends up going to lunch with an author.
