Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary

Newbery Medal

Leigh Botts always liked the author, Mr. Henshaw. So Leigh Botts decides to write him letters. The whole story is written in letters. I like that. He also makes inventions in his free time and solves a mystery.

It is given this title because the boy always writes to a man named Mr. Henshaw.

A boy named Leigh Botts has a favorite author named Mr. Henshaw. He writes letters to him but he, Mr. Henshaw, never replies. Leigh asks him questions about what he should do about them. He doesn't have many friends and when he makes a friend they send time together. Leigh also invents something and solves a mystery in this story.

It was written in letters and very entertaining.

The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherin Paterson

Newbery Honor

This book is about a girl named Gilly Hopkins. Her mom left her when she was little and now she lives in foster homes. She usually doesn't like her foster homes so she just waits for her mom hoping someday she'll come back. Now she's at a new foster home and she's getting attached to the people who live there. At the end her gradmother comes and takes her. Gilly does not want to leave but she is forced to.

I think it got this title because Gilly is so great at switching foster homes.

Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm

Turtle's mom goes to work in a different state, while Turtle has to ruff it up in a town where "pirates used to live!" She fins her grandma, cousins, and friends to be fun, and enjoyable! She fins a treasure but Archie steals it while she finds her mother has sailed here and they settle in the town. They found paradise...even though it's not, to many people!

It is given this title because a girl named Turtle is trying to find paradise, and she does.

4 stars - It was a great book and I recommend it to others.

Doctor Desoto by William Steig

He's a dentist that doesn't take in any kind of dog. He has a wonderful day then a fox needs help. He talks to his wife and lets him in. The fox tries to eat Dr. Desoto but he survives because he knew it was coming.

It is given this title because he's a dentist and his last name is Desoto.

There was a wolf by their dentist shop. The wolf's tooth was in a lot of pain. But the mice were scared. So he let the wolf inside anyway. When they finished working on his tooth, they glued his moth closed so he couldn't eat them.

It was titled "Doctor DeSoto" because the main character was a dentist.

Call it Courage by Armstrong Sperry

Newbery Medal

A boy who had a mother killed by the water from the ocean. He tried to not be afraid of the water. But he managed to fight off that and kill an enemy of his -- the hammer head shark.

It is titled this because the boy was afraid of the water.

3 stars - it was a good book.

Doctor DeSoto by William Steig

Newbery Honor

A dentist mouse makes animals' teeth nice and clean. But a fox comes and he tries to eat the dentist. But the mouse tricks him. And he did not eat anybody.

It was given this title because the book is so cool and I like animals and it was a good book about animals.

Bears on Hemlock Mountain by Alice Dalgliesh

Newbery Honor

This boy went to his aunt's house to get a pot. Then when he gets there he falls asleep and eats cookies. Then he goes back home and on the way he sees bears and his father came and saved him.

It is given this title because it was very adventurous.

Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm

Turtle is the only one that has shoes. Finally after three weeks they got muddy and she took them off. After that she got stranded on an island. Then she found out her step dad only want her money and he takes off.

It is titled this because the girl's name is Turtle and she ends up living where she lives.

My Father's Dragon by Ruth Gannett

Newbery Honor

A fiction story about a little boy who dreamed of flying. So an alley cat told him to go to wild island and save the over worked dragon. Then he will fly you anywhere. So he snuck on a boat and took an adventure and saved the dragon.

It is named this because a little girl's dad, as a kid, found a dragon on an island.

A Visit to William Blake's Inn by Nancy Willard

Newbery Winner

It's a story with a bunch of peoms saying that people come and visit William Blake's Inn. There's staff of dragons that bake and two angles that wash. Then guests come like the boy, sunflower, the king of cats, and the man in the Marmalade hat.

It is given the title because it's about a boy that goes to visit William Blake's Inn.

2 stars - It was ok but a little confusing.
