Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien

1972 Newbery Medal

Mrs. Frisby's son Timothy was seriously ill. They had to move because the farmer was going to plow the field and rosebush. In the end, they move and Timothy becomes well again.

I thought it was a great adventure story that showed things that could happen in life.

4 stars - It was a great book and I recommend it to others.

Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson

2006 Newbery Honor

Soonie's grandmother teaches her how to sew stars, moons, and roads on quilts to help slaves runaway at night. Then towards the end, Ann and Caroline are seven years old and are standing in line with their mother. They're in line to change the law about the differences of the black and whites.

The book was ok but most of the time I wasn't interested reading it.

Honk the Moose by Phil Stong

The kids were playing. But then they saw a moose. And so they named it Honk. Then they all got caught by hunters. And they [the hunters] tried to shoot Honk but the kids siad 'no' so they did not shoot him and Honk lived.

I thought it was a super good book.

A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck

1999 Newbery Medal

Once there was a girl that went to stay at her grandma's. Her grandma is a little weird and people fear her. The girl gets to experience a new world and she has lots of fun.

I thought that the book was funny and slow and sort of sad.

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

2003 Newbery Honor

In this book, Ray and his friends Mullet Fingers and Beatrice try to save owls. They try to stop a company from building a pancake house where the owls live. In the end the owls get saved.

I think it is a good book for all ages with mystery and adventure.

4 stars - It was a great book and I recommend it to others.

Doctor DeSoto by William Steig

1982 Newbery Honor

Dr. Soto is a dentist, but he is a mouse and does not treat things that eat him. But when a fox has a very bad cavity, the doctor helps him. So when he thinks the fox will eat him, he puts glue on its teeth so the fox will never visit him again.

It was ok but it would be better if they showed whatever happened to the fox after he leaves.

2 stars - It was ok.

In the first part of the book, Claudia thinks she is not appreciated so she runs away from home with James, her brother, for a few days to the Metropolitan Museum. But when she goes there and sees a statue called Angel, she has to know more about it. This leads her to Farmington, Conn, to the house of Mrs. Frankweiler. Mrs. Frankweiler gives them the information they need and a ride home.

It was a good book, but what made it just good was that they never really needed the money from the fountain.

The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo

2004 Newbery Medal

At the first part, Desperaux is born, but he is very small with big ears and eyes open. Also, he does not act like a mouse. During his mouse lessons, he reads a book that gives him courage. He also talks to humans. When he is banished to the rats, he escapes but finds out the Princess is in danger. So he goes back down to the rats and saves her.

It was a good book, but it skipped around and went back in time too much.

Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson

It starts with the writer's great-great-great grandma being sold from her parents. When she's sold, she makes a 'show way' and tells her kids there's a road. And it keeps repeating that until slaves are free. But they still keep on making 'show way' to this day.

What made it three stars is that it was confusing at the beginning.

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

2004 Newbery Medal

In the book a small mouse falls in love with Princess Pea. Then Princess Pea gets captured by Miggery Sow and Roscuro. Next Despereaux goes on a quest to save the princess. Then they alllive happily ever after.

It was an exciting book and it was very enjoyable.

4 stars - It was a great book and I recommend it to others.

Karana is on an island by herself and is having to survive off the land. She was stranded on the island 18 years before a priest found her and took her back to Santa Barbara.

I thought it was a very good book and it was historical.

She was trying to wave down a boat. She was the main character of the book. Her name is Karana. She has a dog named Rontu. When Rontu died, she got another one and named it Rontu Ari.

It is about a girl whose tribe leaves her and her brtoher. So they try to survive on the island, but her brother dies by wild dogs. She disperately tries to survive and encounters many dangers.

It was a greaet book and I really enjoyed it.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

Karana and her tribe have been on San Nicolas Island for all of her teen years. She was stranded by her brother when he got attacked by wolves. Her tribe have been killed almost and white men took everyone except Roma, Karana's brother. She swims back and he gets eaten and killed by dogs and wolves. How long will she be stranded? When she lives there for almost eighteen years. She is saved by other white men.

It was a little bit exciting, some parts made me jump when the earthquake and tides come in.

A girl named Karana lived on an island and everyone left the island including her but her brother was on the island so she swam back to the island and she lived there for a little while with her brother and then her brother died by dogs and then she survived for a long time and finally the ship came and saved her.

I think that the book was really good.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

1961 Newbery Medal

This is a story of a tribe where a ship comes for them but Karana's brother is being left, so the sister jumps off the ship for him. So she stayed with him on the island until the wild dogs got Ramo and ate him. She lives on the island for eighteen years by herself. She meets lots of animal friends on the way until a ship comes to get otter but finds her and sends her to Santa Barbara.

It was a great detailed book that has a great story.

A long time ago some Indians were taken off an island by Americans. One of the Indians was left behind--an Indian named Karana. She was stranded on the Island of the Blue Dolphins for 18 years. She befriended many wild animals and faced many dangers. Each day she'd look into the open ocean and wonder... will I ever be rescued?

I thought the book was amazing! It had so much good description! I could see it all happening so vividly.

I thought the book didn't have a great ending, but the rest of the book was exciting and enjoyable to read.

This book is about a girl who is going to the mainland but jumps off to get her brother who was left behind. She then stays with her brother but one night and morning some tragedy happened. Now she has to survive and make her own food and shelter to protect herself. Along her journey, she finds five pets. If you want to know the tragedy, you must read the book.

I though the book was pretty good but it wasn't as action packed as I thought it would be.

A girl named Karana and her tribe get attacked by the Aleuts and they killed most of her tribe in the beginning. White men came to save her tribe and take them to another country. But when the boat was leaving Karana's brother wasn't on the ship. He was still on the island. She jumped and swam to the island. Then her brother, Ramo, got killed by a pack of wild dogs. Then Karana had to live by herself until the white men came to bring her to where her family was.

I thought it was a great book due to the many adventures and surviving and gathering of food she had to do by herself.

In the village a strange ship came with people called Aleuts. The tribe had a battle with them. A different ship came to help the tribe evacuate. Karana was left on the island with her brother who soon died. Karana was left on the island alone for several years until another ship came to help her.

It was a creative book with strange creatures such as devil fish (wish it had a picture) and a strange language.

Well, it starts out as Karana and her tribe are together on the island. Then the Aleuts come to hunt otter and kill multiple men of Karana's tribe. After that, Karan's tribe leaves with white men and leave Karana and her brother behind. Then a bunch of months go by and Karana's brother dies. Plus Karana goes to the island of her people.

I though it was a great book with wonderful detail and excitement.

It is all about how at first man cames to the island hunting sea elephant. When they left they killed many people. The clan living on the Island of the Blue Dolphin decide to go to another land so the chief paddles to America. A while later, a ship comes. It is the white man. Everyone leaves but she realized that her brother was not on the boat. She jumped off and swam to shore. But her brother died from attack by wild dogs. Then she survived until the boat comes back.

It was excellent.

The Aleuts come to an called San Nicholas Island where our main character, Karana, lives. She is the daughter of the chief of Ghalos-at. Throughout the book, she encounters many mental and physical problems. She makes friends with animals and is the most resourceful person you've seen.

This book is very detailed and interesting. I think everyone should try to read this book in your spare time.

This book is about a tribe living on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. One day a ship comes and takes a lot of otter skins. The tribe got into a war with them. When they leave many of the men are dead. A couple of months later another ship comes. They want to take them to Santa Barbara. Karana goes but she sees her brother on the island so she jumps off and goes to the island with her brother. They live there for many days. There are many surprises while she is there. And one day she sees a ship and goes to Santa Barbara, too.

I think the book was one of the best books I ever read. I think that every one should read it. It's awesome.

A young woman was left on an island with her brother. Her brother soon died and she got a lot of pets. One was Rantu. She had to fight wild dogs and hunt for food. Her name was Karana. She was found and rescued. Then she died about six weeks after her rescue.

I thought it was a very good book! I would recommend it to other people.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

1961 Newbery Medal

A girl who lives on an island and these people come and ask if they can hunt otter. The king of the tribe says they can but they have to pay them. So they make a deal but at the end when they are done they don't pay them. Then a fight breaks out and kills almost all the warriors and then the new leader goes to America. Then he sends American's to get them. When they come and then they forget Karana's brother and she jumps out to get him. He is killed by wild dogs and Karana is left to fend for herself.

I really liked it. A thumb's up.

Karana and Ramo are left on the Island of the Blue Dolphins because of Ramo who forgot his spear when the white men went away from the island. With everyone on the ship, Karana jumped off the ship and swam to the island. Ramo died from wild dogs. He had a gash in his throat.

Karana, an Indian girl, was stranded on an island for many years. To keep herself alive she made weapons, built shelter, found food and even had to fight wild dogs and her enemies. The island she is stranded on is the Island of the Blue Dolphins, located in the middle of the Pacific. This adventure is not just survival but also natural discovery.

I thought the book was a great adventure and I would definitely describe this to many people.

Then many terrible things happen to her. Her dog dies, but soon after that she gets a new one and she travels to Santa Barbara.

This book is very emotional but so interesting you can't stop reading.

There was an Indian tribe on an island and one day people from the East take them there. Karana's brother was left on the island so she went back to the island. A few days later he died and she was alone with animals for 18 years.

I loved it and while I was reading I thought how cool it would be if it was true and to my surprise it was.

A girl named Karana and her tribe lived on an island off the California coast. One day the Aleuts came and before they started a battle over otter skin. Many people died but the Aleuts left. Her brother was left on the island when the white men saved their tribe. Karana jumped to save him. He ended up being killed by wild dogs and Karana finally got saved by the Santa Barbara missionaries but she died 2 weeks later due to her diet change.

I thought the book was good and the historical fiction of it was really great.
