Holes by Louis Sachar

1999 Newbery Medal

As further evidence of his family's bad fortune which they attribute to a curse on a distant relative, Stanley Yelnats is sent to a correctional camp in the Texas desert where he finds his first real friend, a treasure, and a new sense of himself.

The book is about a teenaged boy named Stanley. He is guilty of stealing a pair of shoes. His choice is to either go to jail or go to camp. He chooses to go to camp, but when he gets there the camp is horrid. He and his new friend, Zero, go through the terrible days together.

The book was not my favorite, but it was pretty good.

2 stars - it was ok.

Holes is about a boy named Stanley. He goes to a store one day and stole a pair of shoes and dropped them over the bridge [editor's note: Stanley is actually falsly accused of stealing the shoes. He meets the boy that really stole the shoes later in the book]. The store owner saw him so he got sent to a hard camp. There Stanley had to dig up huge holes at the desert during camp. Finally his parents come get him from the camp and take him home.

I thought that it is probably for fourth graders and up because it was different and the third graders and down probably wouldn't understand it.

2 stars - It was ok.

A boy named Stanley Yelnats was given a choice to go to Camp Greenlake or jail. He chose Camp Greenlake even though it isn't a camp at all. At Camp Greenlake he has to dig holes 5 ft. wide and 5 ft. deep. Stanley figures out that they are not digging for character, they were digging to find something. In the end the Yelnats' family curse and plenty of other mysteries were resolved.

I thought it was a great book that everyone should read at least once in their life.

I thought it was good. I loved when he and his friend go on that long journey.
